First Floral Games of Famalicão

1920 Porto

News acquired by the Department’s intelligence and espionage services.

The weekly newspaper Notícias de Famalicão organised some very popular Floral Games, the results of which were announced last week. The theme was ‘Eternal Republic’. After carefully analysing the works submitted to the competition, the jury decided to award the prize to the poem ‘Why am I Republican’, submitted under the pseudonym Teller.

The author’s identity will be revealed at a public ceremony to be held in a fortnight’ time in the main hall of the Town Hall.

To give our readers an idea of its patriotic nature, as well as its literary finesse, we’ve transcribed two short fragments of the award-winning poem:

« ‘A king’s son, king shall be.’

So they say, it has been the way.

No matter what, come what may

King will be, even if a thug he’s been.

(…)

But on a bright 5th October

From the balcony of our capital

Rose to heaven the beautiful character

Red and green of our Portugal! »

The poem will be published in its entirety in a monograph published by the City Council.
